It is said that from the year 1960 to 1970, Indian fashion absorbed many elements of the Western clothing and at the same time, Western fashion also started trying Indian dresses or their elements. During that time, it was seen that middle class Indian women living in the migrant communities that usually favored western clothing, gradually started to wear traditional Indian clothes for occasions. This was the result of the mutual appropriation.

This was actually a very good practice because it brought two cultures closer. This practice continued till the 1990s and that is when the western designers started to incorporate Indian traditional crafts, techniques, and textiles. During that time, even Indian designers started to draw inspiration from the west. The boundaries or limitations of Indian and Western fashion were becoming blurred.

Today, an ideal example of a popular indo-western men's wear is the Nehru jackets. Nehru Jackets are essentially a jacket that resembles a lot like a western jacket, which comes with a closed and high neck collar. Nehru Jackets are worn with western as well as traditional clothes. The collar of the Nehru jacket gives it a distinct unique look and at the same time distinguishes it from regular jackets. Nehru jackets' collars are similar to the Sherwani's bandh gala. You can wear Nehru jackets in a lot of ways. You can pair Nehru jacket with tailored trousers, which will give you a western and modern look, or you can wear it over traditional ethnic wear such as Kurta Pyjama or Sherwani.
